Prof.Hung-YuanLi
Professor Hung-Yuan Li is currently professor of Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, Taiwan and attending physician of the Department of Internal Medicine, National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan. He received his medical degree from Medical College, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and had his resident training for internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism in National Taiwan University Hospital, Taiwan. He received Master and Ph.D. degree in Graduate Institute of Clinical Medicine, Medical College, National Taiwan University, Taiwan. Since 2019, Professor Li has been an elected member of the executive board of the Diabetes Association of the R.O.C. (DAROC), after serving as its Deputy Secretary-General from 2007 to 2019. He has played an active role in DAROC initiatives, including drafting the Taiwan Declaration on Diabetes and producing the diabetes awareness song A Better Way. He has also contributed to the writing and editing of multiple clinical guidelines and book chapters published by DAROC and National Taiwan University Hospital. In addition, he serves as Assistant Editor of the Journal of Diabetes Investigation, the official journal of the Asian Association for the Study of Diabetes (AASD), and was previously Editor-in-Chief of the Formosan Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, the official journal of DAROC. Since October 2021, he has been CEO of the Formosan Diabetes Care Foundation, which focuses on public education and raising awareness about diabetes. In research, Professor Li is interested in epidemiology and translational research of diabetes. He has established a large community-based cohort to publish approximately 30 papers about the screening and diagnosis, risk factors, pathogenesis, and biomarkers of diabetes. The paper about screening of diabetes have been adopted in the guidelines of DAROC. Professor Li has established cell and animal models of obesity, diabetes and atherosclerosis and devoted himself in translational researches of several potential targets, including vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1), fibrinogen-like protein 1, ANGPTL4, and ANGPTL6. He has demonstrated that VAP-1 is a biomarker to predict diabetic complications and a therapeutic target of atherosclerosis. For these studies of VAP-1, he received Professor Fang-Wu Chen Outstanding Research Award, DAROC and Endocrine society of R.O.C. In recent years, metabolic disorders during pregnancy have become his new research interest. He established several gestational cohorts to study the diagnosis, risk factors and pathogenesis of gestational diabetes and gestational dyslipidemia. For these, he has been invited to write review articles about gestational diabetes. In 2023, he received Masato Kasuga Award for Outstanding Scientific Achievement of the AASD. Professor Li has published 20 book chapters and 148 papers, including some highly-cited papers in high-impact journals such as Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, International Journal of Obesity, FASEB Journal, Obesity and Translational Research.
