Abstract Content
Background and aims *
The study assessed the nutritional status of community children (2-5 years old) and evaluated their mothers level of knowledge, attitude, and practices in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF).
Methods *
Employing an interview-survey type research, 134 mothers and children participated in the anthropometric measurements evaluating their Body Mass Index (BMI). The mothers answered a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices Questionnaire assessing their perceptions and practices in terms of Infant and Young Child Feeding. Results of the Interview-Survey were analyzed using Frequency, Percentage, and Mean.
Results *
The study assessed that 80% of the children are normal in terms of weight-for-age. 14.2% of the children were classified as thin in terms of weight-for-age. This is two times higher than the national prevalence of wasting of 7.9%. 47% of the children are classified as normal in terms of height-for-age. The rate of stunting of the children in the community is at 29.1% which is at par with the national prevalence of stunting at 30.3%. The level of Knowledge and Practices of mothers on Infant and Young Child Feeding is at High level indicating exceeding satisfactory understanding on basic concepts as well as applying it as their way of life. Attitude variable remained at Moderate level indicating meeting satisfactory belief on correct Infant and Young Child Feeding.
Conclusions *
The level of Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices of the mothers reflects on the Nutritional Status of their Children. Mothers KAP levels are moderate to high. When compared, the nutritional status of the children is relatively on a high remarks as well showing majority of the children being on the Normal BMI range. It was noted that almost 80% of children 2-5 years old have Normal BMI showing that they have right upbringing in terms of their nutrition.
