Abstract Content
BACKGROUND: Diabetic extremity foot ulcer is a global burden which poses an increased risk for limb amputations, with consequent reduction in the quality of life. Literature has shown that an establishment of a multidisciplinary team approach is vital in the management of diabetic extremity ulcer disease. Thus, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC) has implemented Diabetic Extremity Care Team (DECT) pathway with a goal of salvaging the affected limb in order to preserve the patient’s quality of life (QOL). OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinico-demographic profiles and outcomes of diabetic extremity ulcer patients admitted at Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center before and after the implementation of DECT Pathway from January 2023 to December 2024.
METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study of 215 adult patients who were admitted primarily due to diabetic extremity ulcer at BGHMC before and after the implementation of DECT pathway from January 2023 to December 2024 was done. Descriptive statistics as well as analysis using T-test and Odd’s ratio were done to describe the clinical profiles and outcomes of patients admitted due to diabetic extremity ulcer before and after the implementation of DECT pathway.
RESULTS: The mean age of patients admitted before and after the implementation of DECT pathway were 60.7 years and 59.6 years, respectively. Most admissions are categorized as IDSA PEDIS 3 (moderate) infections. Hypertension is the most prevalent co-morbid condition in both groups. A decrease in time to debridement, time to amputation and length of hospita
CONCLUSION: The multidisciplinary team approach of the DECT pathway is a valuable resource in our hospital in effectively managing adult patients admitted primarily due to diabetic extremity ulcer disease.
